SFI extends solidarity with the MGNREGA workers' strike

The Students' Federation of India express its solidarity on the MGNREGA workers' strike on May 15, 2026, called by the Joint Platform of Agricultural and Rural Workers' Unions and NREGA Sangharsh Morcha to protect MGNREGA and to reject VB-GRAM(G). We express our solidarity on the demands to Roll back VB GRAM (G) and to reinstate and strengthen MGNREGA through providing at least 200 days of work with a minimum wage of Rs 700 which should yearly adjust as per market inflation. The government should also roll back of the exclusionary technology for payments and attendance systems and should empower the Gram Sabhas to be a major stakeholder in MGNREGA works and its implementation throughout the villages.

The BJP-RSS-led Union Government has intensified its attack on the working class and the common people of India. The MGNREGA, which guaranteed employment to the rural poor, has been weakened by the Modi Government, pushing a vast section of the population into insecurity and exploitation. Moreover, the incapacity of the Modi Government has worsened the LPG crisis in India, placing additional hardships on households across the country. At the same time, anti-worker policies have created distressing conditions for workers in major industrial sectors. With the rapid implementation of anti-poor measures, the Modi Government has made the lives of ordinary people in India increasingly difficult and miserable. SFI will stand in solidarity with the fight of the working class and the common people of India against the anti-people measures of the Modi Government.
