Students' Federation of India strongly condemns the brutality of the Bihar police on SFI comrades who were demanding a degree college in Nalanda. The Bihar state president of SFI Com. Kanti Kumari, along with SFI Nalanda district secretary Com. Savitri Kumari and 40 other activists were brutally assaulted, dragged and remanded by the Bihar Police amidst the peaceful protest on 18 June 2026. We demand the immediate release of Com. Kanti and others.
After a long and continuous struggle by SFI, a degree college was sanctioned in Nalanda. SFI's Nalanda district committee demanded that the college be built in the city headquarters, highlighting concerns about common students' access to all facilities. However, plans had been made to shift the college from the headquarters to Lodipur, following pressure from the local MLA. SFI Bihar immediately staged intense protests and demonstrations against the plan. On 18th, SFI, with the support of the general public, staged a road block protesting the issue. The administration and the Bihar police interrupted a protest demonstration and brutally manhandled the protestors. SFI leaders, including Com. Kanti Kumari (State President of SFI, Bihar), Com. Savitri Kumari (District Secretary of SFI Nalanda) and several other activists were dragged, assaulted and jailed by the Bihar police and state government.
In BJP's double-engine government-led states like Bihar, the basic right to education and people's access to a fair life are afterthoughts. The ruling class's priorities of political, ideological and financial gains swallow the primary concerns of the common people, exposing the abuse of power in broad daylight. SFI strongly condemns this tendency and demands immediate action to ensure fair and equal access to higher education for the students in Nalanda district.
We demand the immediate release of Com. Kanti and others. We call on the democratic-minded student community and the general public to rise in rage against this brutality and unite in standing for the fulfilment of our demands.
